Assistive Technology (AT) Services
What are AT services?
Assistive Technology (AT) refers to “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of children with disabilities.”
In education, Assistive Technology is used to enhance learning and support classroom performance and participation for students who qualify for special education services in accordance with Bulletin 1508, the Louisiana Pupil Appraisal Handbook (PDF).
Assistive Technology in Education
Assistive Technology can range from simple, low-technology tools to sophisticated, high-technology devices. Examples may include:
- Pencil grips and adapted writing tools
- Raised-line paper and other adapted materials
- Visual supports and organizational tools
- Text-to-speech and screen-reading software
- Alternative keyboards and mice
- Speech-generating devices
- Other specialized technology and equipment
The appropriate AT solution depends on each student's individual needs, abilities, educational goals, and learning environment.
AT Evaluation and Support
Assistive Technology services include more than selecting a device. AT supports may include:
- Evaluation of the student's assistive technology needs
- Selection of appropriate AT devices and services
- Acquisition of AT equipment, software, or other supports
- Assistance with implementation and use
- Training for students
- Training and support for families
- Training and support for educators and other professionals
Assistive Technology and the IEP
Assistive Technology must be considered for every student at every Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting.
The IEP team considers whether AT devices or services are needed for the student to access instruction, participate in educational activities, and make progress toward their educational goals.

What Is Child Search?
Child Search is an ongoing effort to identify children who may have disabilities and may benefit from special education or related services.
The Child Search process helps ensure that children who may need additional educational support are identified and connected with the appropriate evaluation and services.
Child Search activities may include efforts to:
- Identify children ages 3 through 21 who are suspected of having a disability or exceptionality.
- Locate children who may be in need of special education and/or related services.
- Provide information to families about available services and evaluation processes.
- Coordinate appropriate evaluation and referral activities.

Gifted and Talented Services
Supporting Gifted and Talented Students
Livingston Parish Public Schools (LPPS) provides services for students identified as gifted and/or talented in grades K–12. These services are designed to meet the individual educational needs of students through enrichment, accelerated instruction, and opportunities to develop advanced academic, artistic, and creative abilities.
How Can a Student Be Referred?
Parents who would like their child to be considered for gifted and/or talented services may request that their child's teacher refer the student for screening.
Teachers may request screening by submitting a referral to the chairperson of the School Building Level Committee (SBLC).
If a student passes the screening process, a recommendation for an evaluation is made. If the evaluation determines that the student meets the criteria for an exceptionality, a committee will develop an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for the eligible student.
Students receive services based on their individual needs as identified through the evaluation process.
Gifted Services
The gifted program provides students with enrichment and/or accelerated academic services. Higher-level thinking, critical thinking, and advanced learning opportunities are incorporated throughout the curriculum to challenge students and support their academic growth.
Talented Services
The talented program provides enrichment opportunities for students to further develop their artistic abilities in one or more of the following areas:
- Theater
- Visual Arts
- Music
Students may qualify for one or more talented areas and receive instruction as recommended through their evaluation.
Talented students are typically pulled from a non-academic course to participate in enrichment services.
Individualized Services
Gifted and talented services are based on each student's individual strengths, needs, and evaluation results. The goal is to provide eligible students with opportunities that challenge them academically and creatively while supporting their continued growth and development.
